Getting a Full Driver’s Licence: What You Should Know

Start with a Provisional

Before getting a full driving licence, you’ll need to start with a provisional. These are easy to apply for, and you can request one from fifteen years and nine months; however, keep in mind that you won’t necessarily be able to get started with driving on public roads until seventeen.

At seventeen, you can legally drive on the roads. This means that you can begin learning to drive officially, at which point, you can book your first driving lessons. Technically, there is no minimum number of official lessons you’ll need to take. However, most people recommend a minimum of 20 hours with a qualified instructor.

Practice Often

Before looking any further ahead, make sure you’ve got to grips with your driving technique. With that being said, driving lessons are often expensive; so, once you are safe on the road, you may want to practice regularly with a supervisor. 

Your supervisor must be older than twenty-one and will need to have held their licence for at least three years. They’ll also need to be qualified for your chosen type of vehicle. There must also be insurance for the individual to drive the car. It’s also noteworthy that learners cannot drive on motorways without an approved driving instructor and a dual controls vehicle.

Book Your Theory Test

By now, you’re hopefully feeling a little more confident in your driving ability. If so, now’s the time to book your theory test. This doesn’t require any hands-on driving but tests your knowledge of road rules and the Highway Code. You will likely have picked up on a lot of these rules during your lessons, but your instructor should help guide you with anything that you haven’t yet encountered.

Once you pass your theory test, you are finally at a stage where you can book your driving test. Once you pass this, you will be issued with a full driving licence (which usually arrives pretty quickly!)
